DescriptionWhile I’ve had a few artists draw multiple pieces for my Captain America theme, I generally stick to a one and done so I can be on the lookout for other talented artists to draw Cap for me.That said, many of the artists I commissioned for Cap are personal favorites. So, starting up a second theme has given me an excuse to work with them again. I became smitten with Max’s art thanks to his work on the Jeff Lemire miniseries Doctor Star and the Kingdom of Lost Tomorrows. (Do yourself a favor and grab a copy if you haven’t already.) I read that one just about the time I finally decided to start commissioning the Cap theme, so I asked Max to be the very first person to draw a scene for me. Fast forward a couple years and I wanted to see Max work his magic on Din Djarin. So, I arranged another commission through Mark Hay at Splash Page Art and waited to see what Max would cook up. Of all my Mando pieces so far, this one has been the most surprising. Rather than placing him in action, he struck a contemplative pose for Din as he leans back against the rock wall for a moment of respite. I wasn’t expecting that, but I dig it because it encourages us to pause for a moment as well. Which, in turn, invites us to take in the atmospheric qualities Max brought to the page. In some ways, this is a busy composition. Yet Max weaves subtle pen and ink magic to bring our eye to Mando’s helmet and cloak by making them the few areas of spotted blacks on the page. From there we follow his arm down to Grogu, who similarly pops forward thanks to the little touches of black and the wash of his hover pram serving as sharp contrast to the white rock behind him. From there our eye can shift to take in the moon high above or the Razorcrest in the background, both of which connect to the spotted blacks in the helmet or cloak to ensure they get added prominence after the main characters. As a result, what could be a busy composition in the hands of a different artist feels remarkably well structured. Social/Sharing |

Fuimara's lineweights is what emboldens the Mando figure and pushes Grogu to the foreground. The wash gets darker further back it goes and fades to lighter lines. It has a space pirate look with the winds lofting Mando's tattered cape.

Grogu is trying his hardest to give a thug vibe.

Bill and Chris shamed me for not having commented yet when this was featured on CAL last night. They were correct to do so. This is a stellar commission and Grogu's expression throwing a little shade may be my favorite part. Congrats!

Max killed this. Great detail, subtly good grey tones, and I like that slightly more sloped helmet. Good stuff! Congrats!
