DescriptionMaybe Invasion is not McFarlane's most famous work, but Batman's last panel is nice. I loved his previous work on Batman Year 2, and this is as close as I can go - I just couldn't resist to get a McFarlane floating cape! For some reason, the strong interpretation of Batman that was given by McFarlane at the beginning of his career didn't make as much noise as his Spiderwork. I will never understand why. I mean, McFarlane Batman was really, really cool, but differently from what happened with Spiderman, where Todd's vision still resonates after almost twenty years, on Batman his interpretation was "forgotten" immediately after he left the character. That was Todd's luck, in a way: because just some year later he was able to re-use everything he had made on Batman for his Spawn - and everybody knows what happened then. I had some problems to assign the inker for this page, due to the patchwork of artist that worked on Invasion. After suggestion of fellow CAF collector Thomas Vise (many thanks, pal) I can finally tell for sure that the inks are from the equally great Paul Craig Russell (I realize now that the first panel should have told this to me very clearly, I think). Most of early McFarlane works were spoiled by inkers that tried to contain is innovative style, and I'm glad to see that this is definetely NOT the case. Social/Sharing |

That page appeared in chapter 1 of Invasion issue 2. P. Craig Russell is the credited inker for that chapter. So double for you since PCR also has a pretty sought after artist also. great combo. Invasion is one of my favorite works by Todd Mcfarlane. I believe outside of the cover it's only time he drew batman in that series.

Very cool! Wasn't this Todd's first comic art? I was only disappointed he didn't draw the whole series. Didn't he leave DC then to do Spider-Man for Marvel & then the Hulk? I only wish Capt.Marvel had been in this book drawn by Todd.
