Starting in the early 1970s, photographer Mitchell Funk pioneered a new field of visual imagery. We will call it Sci-Fi photography. In the late 1970's, he did ad work for the now-defunct Omni Magazine and contributed to the design of Sci-Fi movie posters such as Logan's Run, Embryo, and Tommy. The above image was a concept piece for Omni and is characterized by acutely bold colors and radical design, punctuated by an ultimate man in a da Vinci pose. Forty-five years after its creation, this trailblazing image looks fresh and contemporary, prefiguring much of contemporary Sci Fi imagery.
