Q&A with Gregg and Amanda Spatz

Which piece in your gallery is your favorite and why?

I really don't have a favorite. There are too many that I consider great pieces. Amanda might feel differently, but haven't asked her about it lately.

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I have a degree in Athletic Training and used to work as a Personal Trainer, but have worked the last twenty three years with a large electric utility in Southern California as a "Transmission System Operator". I am basically in charge of a large portion of the electrical grid. I am also married to my beautiful wife Amanda and have a daughter and three sons. Amanda is a stay at home mom for the time being.

How long have you been collecting comic art and what prompted you to start?

I have been collecting art for about twenty years. I used to collect Fantasy calendars from guys like Boris Vallejo and when I realized I could afford to actually buy original art from artists like him, then it became an addiction and a passion. I can just sit and stare at the art on the walls all day long and still notice new things in certain pieces of art that have been hanging for years. Amanda has always enjoyed looking at art and reading Heavy Metal Magazine and has been thrilled to be living in a house with so many artists she has admired through the years.

How do you display/store your collection at home?

Almost all the art is framed and hung on about every wall in the house. The 3D art is in glass display cases to keep them as dust free as possible.

What are your top five most wanted original pages or commissions?

Frank Frazetta Art Adams Frank Cho Mark Ryden Boris Vallejo

Batman by Hale

Commissioned piece Oil on stretched linen 35 1/2" X 35 1/2" This is my grail painting! I had been talking to Phil for years about a Batman painting and it finally happened. This may be his last comic related piece, since he is going away from illustration and just doing fine art these days. I wanted Phil to do Batman the way he wanted him to look and couldn't be any happier.
