Description

‘Odin’ orders that the Odinsword be moved from its sacred chamber to his throne room, against advice, intending to sit on his throne atop the sword. The Odinsword, also referred to sometimes as the Over Sword of Asgard, would cause the end of the Universe should Asgard’s enemies ever unsheathe it. (The fancier name distinguished the oversized and rather critical device from any other sword that Odin might be wielding and carrying at a given time - i.e. “There goes Odin, wielding his sword, and verily was that troll struck with said mighty Odinsword” – as well as distinguishing it from Odin’s trusty Odinfruitknife.) Unfortunately, on this occasion ‘Odin’ is really Mangog in disguise, so the whole sitting-on-the-Odinsword-to-keep-it-safe plan turns out not to be great for Asgard and the fate of the Universe.

The pairing of Big John Buscema and Tony DeZuniga gives this Norse saga a truly epic, Wagnerian feel. The fantastic and truly regal image of Odin’s face in the final panel epitomizes their work together on this title.

To see Odin (or in this case a faker) and the most useless and extreme gadget/"weapon" in all comicdom and a good bunch of Asgardians in the Golden Halls are always a joy to behold ! A classic kirbyesque scene from Thor's other supreme regular artist for many glorious years, perfected by DeZunigas sharp and moody inks ! This page should definetly be in my collection, by Odins bristling beard :)

Great issue, a favorite. Big John was so good on Thor and his run was chock full af spectacular visuals. Truly worthy to lift the pencil to draw so many epic Asgardian tales!

These guys should unionize and not take this kind of abuse. "Dolts"  ... "swiftly or feel my wrath."  That is the kind of talk you used to hear at the SDCC Moy booth for those poor souls who work there.  "Fetch my keys, I forgot them in my hotel room 2 miles away,  I can't unlock the suitcases of artwork without them!  Swiftly you dolts! Or you shall feel my wrath!  The show is about to open!"

Slave labor has no end, not on this planet or another! Let's hope Odin can keep all of it in line!

Hahahahahh!  Odin's trusty Odinfruitknife.  You really got me with that one.  Thank you for the Friday morning belly laugh.  (Lol Marcus too).  And what an excellent page!!  All that gorgeous detail captures the enormity of the sword and puts you right into the scene (and also makes you feel Odin/Mangog's supreme crankiness).  Bravo!

Watch out when Odin brandishes his Odinbutterknife! Legend says it calls Fenris to come eat all the grandmothers. What a super cool page. I so dig the Odinsword stories, when the titans are likely to come out and play. Super cool JB page. Verily, I proffer huge congrats!
