DescriptionAs many in the hobby know, Uncanny X-Men #172 was the Rosetta Stone of my entire comics fandom that began in 1983 and I have spent most of my original art collecting career trying to put as much of the book back together as I can - I currently own the cover and 15 interior pages (including this one where Logan and Mariko welcome the X-Men to Japan). And, yes, for the avoidance of doubt, I will be making a very strong push to get page 22, which is up for auction at Heritage this month.I'd like to thank all of those in the hobby for their past and continued support of my quest to date. Even getting this far in putting the book back together would not have been possible without those who have helped me to obtain pages, passed along information and leads, and otherwise encouraged and supported me in this endeavor. Hopefully there will be something more to celebrate after the Heritage sale in a few weeks. 🤞 Social/Sharing |

You didn't make it easy on yourself with this book as your target, but it's a beautiful issue and worthy of the epic quest!

Great looking page. I like that PMS was stressing the different heights in the characters. Something that's been lost over the years. Happy hunting for additional pages.

Great page from the issue. The close up in panel 3 and the full shot of Mariko in panel 5 are beautiful. Congrats on adding another page from the book and hope it works out for you at HA on pg 22!

While other X-Men artists at that point had their start in the 70's and carried over the past, Paul Smith Uncanny X-Men is very 80's and represented a fresh clean style for the times.

Awesome. I love the use of negative space. Having Mariko unencumbered by text makes her all the more striking.
It made me pull out the book. When paired with the next page (and reveal), the design choice is even better!

I agree - Smith's use of negative space in this issue, as well as his copious use of thin vertical panels, is really striking. It really makes for very visually interesting storytelling even with all the panels being just square or rectangular!

What a great story Gene, and whilst i love you like a brother, you are never going to get my pages from me, so you might as well give up and call it a day, and trade me your pages for my Blue Devil art, that i know is your guily pleasure

I will just have to content myself with the meager scraps of Blue Devil art that escape your grasp!

Once Byrne left the X-men I thought I would stop reading the book but PMS brought me back into the book. Great line work and the inking is excellent as well.

That final panel made me fall in love in the 80s. What a stunner.

I'm amazed with your new Paul Smith page. We are talking about a marvel in one of Claremont's best periods in X-Men.

So many great pages from this issue, and this one is stellar. Cheers to getting closer and closer on finishing up this book.
