Description
A real tour de force from Jim Mooney, showcasing a range of different brush and hatching techniques in this seascape final page splash. Jim threw everything at this page, including sunken galleons, a shoal of fish and a ship’s wheel, and the detail is as fabulous as the Sub-Mariner’s pose. Just in case you were wondering, that’s the corpse of the Symbiotic Man floating limply behind the Avenging Son. Another victory for Namor the First – Imperious Rex!

The Sub-Mariner was already appearing as half of the Super-Villain Team-Up, alongside Doctor Doom, but Marvel hadn’t given up on their longtime anti hero having his own series again. Hence this story in the try-out series, Marvel Spotlight - and the heavy hint in the closing text box to write in to suggest the same. The story starts with a comprehensive recap of Namor’s past glories and infamies, before showcasing the dastardly Captain Simon Ryker, who sets his new aquatic bio-android creation, the Symbiotic Man, after the Sub-Mariner. In his dying gasps, the creature is freed from Ryker’s control, and true to form Namor declares war on pretty much everybody, just for safe measure.

He absolutely killed this page. The pencils, inks, all those wonderful artistic tricks. I love how he inked the corpse, using the dark inks to really make him seem motionless and floating in place. And all those great little details to make this splash really pop, and push Namor to the foreground. Great artistry here. Big congrats!

Great page and there was never any hero outfit more needed and useful than the Romita Sr. designed black "men's bikini" (which sure didn't save his 1st Marvel solo series) and really was revamped nearly 2 decades after your fine page :)

Mooney sends Namor off with grand style!  A visual appeal to fans to keep Namor in print somewhere, somehow!  The splash is powerful and does its job to leave you wishing for more of this quality of Namor stories.

Even great pencils require good inking for maximum impact, and Mooney's inking is as good as it gets. Terrific splash. Congrats.

Mooney was an underappreciated genius!  I had a great time meeting him at SDCC 97.  I enjoyed it so very much.

Jim was not well known for his pencils talent. This page is tremendous. A real treasure for the eyes by one of the pillars of the house of idea who proved here he was among the best. Spectacular !

Mooney!  Mooney!  Mooney!  And the crowd goes wild!!!!

Mooney takes Buscema to the wall with this baby.  As much as I LOVE Buscema's Mariner work, this is my new #1 with a bullet Silver-Age Subby splash.

Thanks Steven. It is a special composition, and Mooney was on fire in the '70s.

While I would hesitate to call Mooney under rated, he was definitely overshadowed by some of the bigger names at Marvel.  But this incredible splash just goes to show what a powerhouse illustrator he was.  Always had a soft spot for Subby's black costume.  From the page caption, it looks like this was published sometime after the cancellation of his own title, with Marvel still urging fans to demand his return.  Alas, even a cool, flashy, new costume couldn't save him.  But you know what they say, you can't keep a good fishman down.  Anyway, congrats on a truly spectacular splash.

Nice Splash. Subby here, feels a bit like Colossus.  Probably the best design and head shape.

Does it get any more cinematic than this?

Narrator's voice:  No, it does not!

Ha ha! It does have that sort of feel, doesn't it? Namor victorious. Merry Christmas to you and yours, Steve.

One of the very earliest comics I ever bought- which is where Paul first saw this page- and still one of Jm Mooney's best jobs.
