Description
This was only Ibis the Invincible’ s second appearance, as Fawcett aficionados will know that Whiz Comics #3 was really the second issue of the run. This is the 2nd page of story (and so the 10th ever Ibis page).

The page was incorrectly labelled when I bought this from Heritage Auctions back in 2015. The odd production/printing instructions that appear on many pages seemed to be a source of confusion – ‘page 33 flat 9’ was taken to be issue 9 of the title, but it is in fact #3. The artist was given as Pete Costanza, but it is really Costanza inks on C.C. Beck. More Ibis pages from that issue were subsequently sold on Heritage and described correctly.

A thief, Hamed, has stolen Ibis’ magic Ibistick, threatening the life of Ibis’ beloved Taia who is trapped in a glass case awaiting rescue by Ibis. The page has suffered, with some corner decay of the backing board and tape in places – but the images have survived remarkably well for a 1940 Fawcett page.

It is nice to see where so much of it all came from.

I didn't expect to see a C.C. Beck page pop up today! Wow that's quite a piece of Fawcett Comics and golden age comics history! Congrats. And nice work calling out HA on their mistakes, glad to hear they subsequently corrected later listings that emerged.

Thanks, Kavi. I was a bit suspicious about the issue number listed being the same as the 'flat' number (some part of the printing process). And when I started looking at the story content listed online, I knew a story with this thief didn't line up with that issue. Thank goodness for online sources! The community does a great job.

Wish I had one. This page might have made it in better condition...

This page is in worse shape than me. Is it restorable?

Is what restorable - the page or you? But seriously, if you think this is in bad shape, wait until you see the next Fawcett page I put up. Well, it's a fair point. I guess it might be worth checking out what can be done, so thanks for the nudge, Peter.

The hairless ape version is called plastic surgery these days. Called that because enough of it makes you look artificial. Prefer to call myself age toned. Lol. More refined individuals call it vintage.

Incorrectly labelled pages warm my heart (just not for the consignor, lol). But seriously, sweet historic GA piece!

Thanks! Yes, I do feel bad for the consignor. But glad for me. It is hard to identify some of these older pages, though. That said, I have a 1980 Defenders page that actually says 'Avengers' at the top of it...

Wonderful piece of history!  With Whiz comics being even the most popular title for a while, Ibis would have fallen in the ranks of comics magicians!  The layout and direction of action remains the same to show how they kept the action in rhythm.

True. And Ibis seemed to become less skinny over the years. Perhaps the Egyptian mage got used to a fast food diet.

Thanks Toni! I often feel a sense of relief and wonderment when someone else puts up an older page, just to know that it survived.

Thanks, Steve! I'll try to brighten another day soon with a 1940 page.

Yep - so many didn't, and some companies were better than others for keeping them. Fawcett seems a bit of a mixed bag. :-)

Wow - this is -SO- cool, Paul!  A classic, historic page, to be sure, from the inception period of this whole medium!  I can't confess to knowing anything about this character (besides the fact that he's, um... invincible?) but what's not to love about a 1940 C.C. Beck page?!?  Wow!  A fun and classic layout that must have been pretty thrilling at the time: where else could you possibly see a dude effortlessly vault a wall, or slide down telephone lines in pursuit of a wrong-doer?  Super cool page, Paul - what a great pick up!  Congrats!

Thanks, Jason! Well, Ibis was 'invincible' unless some lowlife stole his wand. And that seemed to be a recurring feature. I guess the DC Universe was so crowded with magicians, that Ibis didn't feature so prominently after the takeover. And yes, I think a story like this would have been gripping for a young reader in 1940!

Great to see more Golden Age art on the site. A truly historic page and yes it can be restored!

I guess I'm going to have to give that some thought, then. But wait until you see the next GA page I put up. That make take a bit more than normal restoration. I'd be interested to read some opinions.

Classic Beckminimalist on the surface, but the storytelling control and pacing are master level. This is why his Fawcett work endures. Love it!
