DescriptionMarvel Feature v. 2 featuring Red Sonja was one of the series that a friend loaned me to read back in junior high, that led to my getting into comics in 1983! Getting a cover from either this series or the subsequent '70s ongoing Red Sonja series had been at/near the very top of my want list for several years, and so I was thrilled to secure the original cover artwork to issue #6 (all art, no stats, with recreated logo/paste-ups on an acetate overlay). The published cover was, for reasons unknown, "remastered" using pasted-over art alterations on a stat, perhaps by "Romita's Raiders". About the art changes, Frank Thorne recalled, "I was furious when I saw how someone in the bullpen torpedoed my original cover drawing. I protested, and the rest of the covers in the series remained inviolate, with one small exception. Compare the two, mine, the original, is a lot better." This original cover art is featured on page 139 of the Ron Goulart hardcover book Good Girl Art (Hermes Press, 2008). Social/Sharing |

Good with or without logos. I usually have a preference one way or the other (and usually slanted toward logos), but here, the piece looks great both ways. Congrats!

I guess I can kind of see the reason they changed the face on the printed cover. Roy probably thought fiercer Sonja fit the dialogue better. Without the cover copy, I definitely prefer Thorne's version. No surprise, Thorne & Red Sonja are a match made in comic book Heaven. Cheers!

As a young fan during this period, there were two Franks whose work I absolutely HATED--Frank Robbins and Frank Thorne. Like nails on a chalk board. I have since grown so much older, and yes, a little wiser and both artists work have "magically" transformed into masters of their craft. About time. This is a great example!

Beautiful work! Different than other comics and art, obviously with the lush drawings but also with the magical stories.

Just something so right about seeing Sonja with a sword in one hand and a dagger in the other--incredible piece!

I can't help but agree with Frank: the original is truly unique and a lot better! Congrats and thanks for sharing this beauty!
